Legal Certainty Lunch

Legal Certainty Lunch

The Guatemalan Canadian Chamber of Commerce held a luncheon to analyze from the economic, social and legal perspectives, the effects of the courts’ actions for trade and their development. The event counted with the participation of expert analysts in each area in a proactive, conversational and comprehensive analysis environment such as: Pedro Trujillo, Ramón Parellada, Stuart Ralón and Jorge Luis Herrera.

The Guatemalan-Canadian Chamber of Commerce, CANCHAM, as an apolitical, non-religious and non-profit association whose mandate is to promote and expand trade relations, services and industry between Canada and Guatemala; carried out this activity within the framework of the institutional vision; The Chamber seeks to promote bilateral trade between Canada and Guatemala through the provision of services that stimulate, promote and develop a close relationship between the two countries, so there is a high interest and importance in supporting the optimal conditions in Guatemala for the growth of the economy, trade and foreign investment.

The commercial relationship between Guatemala and Canada is increasingly solid and in development; visualizing itself as a strategic line for economic growth and being increasingly attractive for companies from different sectors and, therefore, providing a very positive impact on commercial activity, sources of work, local development, strengthening in value chains, among others, with this it is affirmed that Canada is a very important ally for Guatemala, which can positively impact our growth and for this it is necessary that it can be provided within a framework of sustainability for both parties.

In order to promote trade, investment and tourism, CANCHAM at the opening of the event, asked the Government to strengthen legal certainty; demanding that the concessions and rights granted in law be respected national and international companies that have been granted based on the law and fulfilling all the requirements of the State of Guatemala; emphasizing that the absence of legal certainty not only threatens current legitimate operations, their workers and the beneficiary communities, but also makes it even more difficult to attract productive projects that generate employment and that benefit the development of the communities. The impact can be seen by taking into consideration that a few years ago Canada was one of the main investors in Guatemala. With legal certainty at stake, it becomes increasingly difficult to retain and attract new investments.

Due to the above, CANCHAM facilitated a constructive and propositive analysis platform on the “Economic effects of the Cortes’ actions in Guatemala”, counting on expert analysts and, in a respectful way, enriching said activity through the exchange of opinions and points of view that contribute to this comprehensive analysis.
